Let’s face it, poop smells!

If you plan on throwing diapers in the garbage, you will soon learn the reason a Diaper Genie was invented!

It traps the smell into an air tight package so it doesn’t smell up the whole house. When I moved I forgot to bring the Diaper Genie and I spent a week without it. Let me tell you, it was the smelliest week I have ever had. I would be emptying the garbage every night and then my garage started to smell until trash day came.

If you are registering for baby gifts or shopping yourself, make sure that is first on the list, even before baby clothes and a crib. Okay, it’s not that important, but it will make your life a bit easier during your first couple years and anything that makes life easier you will learn to appreciate!

Knowing Your Child’s Learning Style Can Aid Mental Development
April 6, 2008

Every child, and every person, learns differently. It’s not “what” a child knows but “how” he knows it. Educators commonly define seven different learning styles:

1) Linguistic

2) Mathematical

3) Spatial

4) Intrapersonal

5)Interpersonal

6) Kinesthetic

7) Musical

Knowing your child’s individual learning style can help you meet his educational needs better. By providing activities that use your child’s learning style, you can help your child in the best way for him or her. There are few things to keep in mind:

* Your child may have more than one learning style.

* Even if your child has a particular learning style it is still important to provide a large variety and different types of stimulation to maximize their learning potential and retention.

* One learning style can be used to teach a child a concept and a different one to reinforce it.

Babies on airplanes!!!

If you are at the disadvantage of being far away from your loved ones and you and your little package will have to fare a plane ride home, here is a few tips to keep in mind.

  • Be Prepared

Make sure that you do your research about what you can and can not bring on the airplane and have all your items ready as your approach security. If you bring a stroller you can more than often times ask to be put through security at the wheel chair access for a little extra time handling your things and a lot shorter of a security wait, a plus for everyone involved.

  • Dress Appropriately

If the baby is your child, you or your next-of-kin relative must hand-carry the baby through security. All slings and extra clothing have to go on the belt, and you can not stop during the process and hand the baby to someone behind you.

Make sure that you have all of your tickets, identification and boarding passes ready to avoid any hold up. For a baby, you must have a birth certificate or certificate of live birth with your name on it and a social security card, if available.

  • Bottle up, Bottle down

Make sure that you have a bottle ready for the airplane ride up and down, even if it is water or juice. This minimizes the strain from the pressure and keeps their ears clear, a problem that occurs with most crying infants on board. Good luck! Stay calm and just remember to breathe.

Time-outs for Toddlers

If your toddler is very distressed by a simple time-out for bad behavior it can be hard for a parent to take.  However, before you decide not to use this as a discipline tool, keep in mind that his reaction is actually a clue that it is working.  There are ways though that you can make these lessons a little less painless for you and your child and still discipline your child with love and logic.

Work towards good behavior-try to circumvent bad behavior and the need for discipline before it happens.  Provide him with lots of interesting activities and loving interaction with you throughout the day and make routines fun.  By minimizing your child’s frustration you alleviate some of the possibilities for bad behavior. Don’t forget that frequent meals, enough sleep and some cuddling can help toddlers (and their parents) better manage their emotions.

Reserve time-outs for the worst behaviors, such as hitting or biting.  If time-outs are being used more than once or twice a day, there may a problem with your expectations of his abilities.

Tailor the time-out to your child’s personality.  Some children calm down seconds after being disciplined while others take longer. Watch your child’s body and when she relaxes a bit and her crying has subsided, then get her out of time-out and into a favorite activity.  Also try to find a way to praise her shortly after the time-out and always give hugs and love. A child must realize that it’s the behavior that you find fault with and not them.

Any disciple method takes time and requires patience and consistency to see if it’s working.  Give this method about four weeks.  If you don’t see improvement then consider other factors like gaps in language or eye-hand coordination.  Perhaps it’s just a stage the child is going through or something stressful going on in the home or daycare.  Talk to your pediatrician if you are concerned about aggressive behavior that does not respond to firm but loving discipline.

It’s that time again-from May through October you can find local farmers’ markets sprouting up like yummy veggies all over the U.S. Farmers and crafters’ bakers and makers gather on market days in rural areas, suburbs and big cities to sell their produce and other homemade items.

At your local farmers’ market you’ll fulfill all these reasons to shop:

1. Freshness-sometimes picked early that very morning of market day.

2. Variety-produce that is cultivated for just your area so you get a wide variety of texture, flavors and appearance.

3. Environment-walk or bike and bring your own bags. You can even purchase organic for less cost.

4. Community-you help your community and local area farmers and producers by keeping your dollars where you live.

5. Your Health-probably the most important! You get access to better quality produce that is good for you.

There are many more reason to support a Farmers’ Market but my favorite is the wonderful tasting produce. It really spoils you! See you there!
